Say what you need to say….

Img Source:

Hi peeps, how are you doing? I’m so so sorry for letting my blog untouched for the last 1 month. Here are some updates about me recently just to set the stage for the story that I’m going to tell you in the next 10 minutes.

I finished my internship at Collectibly, which I did enjoy very much. Now, I’m back to school, currently in my third year in NUS, taking 5 modules this semester with a huge amount readings and assignments. Blah, blah, blah…Yea, you know what it is like being in school. However, every time I went back to school after a 3-month long summer, I always realized that I had changed so much during that short period of time and this summer is not an exception. I become more vocal, more open and especially, I choose to be more receptive to life’s myriad possibilities. I have to admit that after subscribing to Vincent Nguyen’s Self Stairway blog, I have developed a more positive outlook in life and become more confident.

Sometimes, we just need to set aside all our fears and insecurities to embrace what this amazing life has given us. Talk to someone new everyday. Make new friends. Speak your mind. Smile widely whenever you see someone you know. Ask those who used to be your close friends out for lunch or a cup of coffee. Anything. Why? Because I realized how these little actions can do wonders and make my day. For me, it’s a great pleasure to meet up with friends, both old and new, because I know for sure that their stories will never fail to amaze me. Although they are ordinary people, what they say can be just as effective as a speech from any inspirational speaker. And that’s exactly what I need to make me feel energized and happy.

Enough beating around the bush, let’s get to the main story of this blog post right now.

So here I am, rushing from Central Library to Computer Center, hoping that I reach there in time to queue for the Microsoft Surface RT, which is now offered half price in NUS. OK, I know that you probably think what on earth makes me want to spend my hard-earned money on the Surface RT because that tablet sucks. Yet, it’s a totally different topic so do spare me your reactions at the meantime.

I get into the queue, which is surprisingly long, starting all the way from the first floor stair case to the fourth. Realizing how boring it is queuing there, I start a conversation with a guy queuing behind me asking whether I can pay by cash for the tablet or not. And here it goes, our conversation just goes on and on and on. I remembered myself queuing there for approximately 1 hour straight and thanks to that decent chat, time does fly.

After finishing our payments and everything else, we eventually have to part ways. He asks me whether I want to keep in touch and I say “Yes, why not?”. Then, we exchange our numbers and I realize how great I feel after making a new friend. We are not classmates, not staying in the same hall, don’t have any mutual friends and of course, we have nothing in common besides queuing next to each other to buy a tablet. However, if I didn’t start the conversation with him in the first place, I would have no idea that we can get along so well. Sometimes, we just need to open ourselves up, start a conversation naturally and see how it goes. You’ll never know what the future brings if you never take the very first step. Start to embrace the opportunity.

After exchanging our numbers, we messaged each other a few times that day. On the next day, I was quite surprised to receive his text again asking me how my day was. I enjoyed texting him back, sharing things about my life and it was fun reading his replies. After a few text messages, I started to wonder where this text message conversation was going. I know clearly that I’m very bad at maintaining relationships. I wondered whether me being so open would give him “false signals”, which is bad given the fact that I already have a boyfriend. All these thoughts kept revolving around my head and I couldn’t decide whether I should tell him directly that I already have a boyfriend and I hope we are just friends, or I should stop replying him or just give him a one-two word reply to show my lack of enthusiasm and hoping that he knows what I mean. Considering all these options, I decided to text him saying exactly what I feel and make my stand clear from the start. I had no idea how he would react. Would he think I’m weird, or crazy, or stupid? I don’t know. Still, I chose to speak my mind and just be frank and honest to him. At least that’s what a friend should do and be. He is such a nice guy and he deserves my honesty.

Eventually, I got a reply from him for my text message. He thanked me for being honest and making my stand clear right from the start. He didn’t think that I’m weird at all and he also already has a girlfriend. He also hopes that we can become good friends because we had such a decent chat that day. Everything turns out just fine and I felt so happy because I knew that I had done a right thing.

So the key take away is: speak your mind and say what you really want to say. Just be nice, frank and honest and other people appreciate you doing just that. In short, it is the crux of building any relationship, no matter it is friendship, courtship or partnership.

OK, that’s all I have for now. Hope you guys have a great week ahead and don’t forget to open up yourself to other people. They can surely make your day!

With lots of love,

Lynn ❤

A Who’s who of the Minions

There has never been a definite guide to the names of the Minions in the original Despicable Me movie until today. Follow us on this journey as we unravel the identities of the minions together! Disclaimer: All information is found after countless hours of rewatching the movie and researching the available toy lines on the Internet.

Jalen and I spent a total of 1 week working on this infographic exclusively for Collectibly. We decided to kick-start this project because everybody loves minions and there are tons of minions collectors around the world. It is obviously a great way to bring our brand out there and this time, our infographic literally went viral! We weren’t able to keep track of all the shares/views or likes of our infographic across so many platforms, but at least on, our infographic has garnered 33.5k views and 3.1k likes: Woot! Great content rules!
Although this infographic is a success for Collectibly, I am personally a bit sad when I saw our infographic being reposted on 9gag and many other platforms without crediting us as the original author. A random guy on 9gag cropped out our company’s watermarks and blatantly take credit of the post for himself, which makes me extremely furious as can be seen here Of course, we commented there to reclaim our authorship for the post. However, there is not much we can do because that 9gag post has gained a whole load of likes and views while our brand name was no where to be found. Anyway, we learnt a valuable lesson from this incident. Next time we will be ready to face these content thieves!

A Guide to Superman’s Kryptonite

A Guide to Superman's Kryptonite

This is the first infographic that I have designed in my entire life and it turned out to be quite decent. After two hours of us posting it on Collectibly’s blog, it went viral on tumblr. 200+ likes and reblogs totally got us by surprised. We didn’t expect the responses to be that many though because it’s the first time that we have churned out this kind of content. It’s like experimenting with new stuffs all the time and we never know what will be the result. It can be good, it can be bad, but at least we learnt our lessons. It’s basically the gist of a start-up’s life. So after all, our hypothesis is confirmed: people love infographics.

There were a good mix of both positive and negative responses, which is good because at least the content is interesting and controversial enough to spark some heated discussions. So I hope you enjoy reading it and do feel free to give me feedback because I would love to hear from all of you!

Here is another interesting story dedicated to all Superman fans and comic collectors out there. If you have been following all the Superman related updates in the past few weeks, you might have come across this piece of news – a copy of Action Comics #1 had been found in the insulation of an old house in Minnesota – where it had apparently dwelled for the last 75 years.

Listed for auction at in the end of May and graded CGC 1.5 by the Certified Guaranty Company, this extraordinary comic book has just been sold for $175,000 on June 11. This is a quite impressive price for such a low grade comic book, given the fact that it is the highly-coveted original copy of Action Comics #1. In comparison, a copy in CGC 1.8 was sold by Comic Connect for $116,000 in 2010 and a CGC 2.0 was sold in December 2012 for $175,000.

Being referred to as “the grail in the wall” and “a virgin copy” by ComicConnect’s spokesperson, it is understandable that this item could fetch the record price compared to other comics of the same grade because collectors appreciate the unusual story behind its discovery.

David Gonzales, who have bought the old house and discovered the valuable comic book while taking down the wall’s insulation, said that its back cover was torn in an argument with his wife’s relatives. Unfortunately, this damage resulted in diminishing the comic’s value by approximately $75,000.

Action Comics #1, which marks the debut of our legendary hero – Superman,  has been particularly well-known for its mind-blowing price every time a new item goes for sale. This issue was published in 1938 and costed only 10 cents back then.

On March 19, 2010, sold another copy for $1.5 million just a few weeks ago after another copy of the issue sold for $1 million. However, twice before 2010, it had fetched the highest prices of $86,000 in 1992 and $150,000 in 1997.

In 2011, another ultra-rare and pristine copy of Action Comics #1 (graded 9.0/10) was sold at $2,160,000, which has become the world’s most expensive comic ever since. It was speculated to be the one that once belonged to famous actor Nicholas Cage, which was stolen from him in 2000.

Experts in the comic world commented that this kind of investment has become a trend recently especially during the gloomy economic periods because rare collectibles’ values are more reliable than that of property or shares.

10 things that you might not know about Superman

Hi guys! I wrote this article for my company’s blog last week. Make sure that you equip yourself with these 10 Super-facts before heading for Man of Steel! Btw, check out Collectibly blog if you are craving for more posts about the Last Son of Krypton:

Superman, one of the world’s most iconic superheroes, will celebrate his 75th birthday this year ever since his comic book debut back in 1938. Since his first appearance in the highly-coveted Action Comics #1, Superman has always been a comic legend that represents “Truth, Justice and The American Way”.

14th June is going to be a big day for all Superman fans out there as “Man of Steel” marks the return of Superman to the silver screen after 7 long years. 3 official trailers and 12 (spoiler-ish) TV spots later, everybody (that includes you. Why else would you be reading this?) is eagerly anticipating their turn at catching the son of Krypton in action again.

But just how much of a super-fan are you? Let’s find out.

Here are 10 super-facts that you might not know:

Most of the superheroes’ birthdays are not revealed in their comics, but Superman is one of the exceptions. However, it is unclear when Superman’s real birthday is. Some stories state that Kal-El’s birthday falls on February 29th – same date his rocket landed on Earth. In another comic, writer Geoff Johns claimed this date was actually December 1st.

As seen in Action Comics #241 released in 1958, The Man of Tomorrow celebrated two birthdays: June 10th – the day Superman crash-landed on planet Earth and June 18th – the day Clark was adopted by the Kent family. In the TV series “SmallVille”, he celebrates his birthday in the month of May.

ImageMoreover, Superman and Clark Kent have been seen together at the same place and time – several times. On one occasion, thanks to his DC Super Friends and their shape-shifting ability, Superman and his alter-ego were seen and photographed together at the same time. This was done so in order to protect his identity. Another popular method is making use of Superman (or Clark Kent) robots (in Silver Age stories). So in the eyes of the public, they are nothing more than just good friends who bear great resemblance to each other.

Many comic book readers will remember that Superman tied the knot with the famous reporter Lois Lane in the mid 90s in the original story. However, she was not the only woman who captured Superman’s attention and heart. In high school, as portrayed in the hit TV series “Smallville”, Lana Lang was his primary interest for the majority of the show. And in college, Clark also dated a girl named Lori Lemaris who turned out to be a mermaid from the Atlantis. While travelling trough time to Krypton’s past, he was attached toLyla Lerrol, a famous Kryptonian actress. And recently in the relaunch of the DC Universe, “New 52”, Superman shared a kiss with Wonder woman!Image

“New 52” Justice League #12, Superman kisses Wonder Woman

As a kid in high school, Clark was visited by the Legion of Super-Heroes, a team of super-powered teenagers from the 30th century who had been inspired by legends of his life. Seeing he was desperate for a chance to hang out with kids who were more like him, the Legion regularly brought Clark into the far future to join them in adventures. These trips with the LSH helped Superman learn to become a hero. He knew Earth was worth protecting and fighting for because he’d seen what it would achieve 1,000 years down the line.

4.The creation of Superman strongly ties to canada

According to, the Superman character was co-created by Canadian artist Joseph Shuster. Born in Toronto, he is a cousin of Wayne Shuster, one-half of the beloved Canadian comedy duo Wayne and Shuster. Joseph, who passed away in 1992 at the age of 78, said Metropolis was modelled on Toronto and the Daily Planet was inspired by the Toronto Star, which he delivered as a kid.

The long-running series Smallville, which focused on the early life of Clark Kent, was filmed in British Columbia. The Metropolis in that movie is actually Calgary. One of the principal writers and artists on the Superman book over theyears, who did a major overhaul on the character in the 1980s is John Byrne, also from High River, and attended the Alberta College of Art. And you know, the list goes on.

Originally the famous letter “S” shield simply stood for Superman. However, another interpretation was that it represents the El family crest and the Kryptonian symbol for “Hope”. If you flip the symbol upside down, it means “Resurrection”. This was why Clark chose it as his seal when he became a public hero. Since it bears great resemblance to a letter S, along with his formidable capabilities, reporter Lois Lane was inspired to call him “Superman”. Image

Many people know that Superman is afraid of kryptonite, a green rock that is extremely toxic to anyone with Kryptonian physiology, but mostly harmless to the human kind. It depletes Superman’s powers and causes him extraordinary pain and death after prolonged exposure.

However, it is not Superman’s sole weakness.

Despite having invincible strength, Superman is a mortal and therefore, is still susceptible to all kinds of black magic. On top of that, Superman cannot see through lead, and he is weakened when exposed to red solar energy similar to that of his home planet’s sun, Rao. In his Pre-52 appearances, Superman occasionally had to physically exert himself for a long period of time, which leads to the insufficiency of solar energy to fuel his power. Superman once had to face death because of this in the famous battle with Doomsday.

Sometimes people think of Superman as a god or an angel, in some cases this is not far from the truth. Superman’s birth name “Kal-El” resembles words in Hebrew meaning “Vessel of God”. The suffix “el” meaning “God” is found in the names of a few angels such as Gabriel and Ariel.

Superman’s earth parents, known today as Jonathan and Martha Kent, had numerous name changes. They were:

  • “passing motorists” in Action Comics #1 (1938),
  •  “Mary Kent” in Superman #1 (1939)
  •  “Eben and Sarah Kent” in The Adventures of Superman(a 1942 novel by George Lowther) and in the Adventures of Superman TV series
  • “John and Mary Kent” in Superman #53 (1948)
  • Mr. Kent is given the first name of Jonathan in Adventure Comics #149
  • Mrs. Kent is given the first name of Martha in Superboy #12 (1951)

Who would have known that the all time favorite superhero began his life as a bald telepathic villain who wanted world domination? Superman made his first public appearance in Action Comics #1 but most of us don’t know that Jerry and Joe first created Superman inJanuary 1933 in a story called “The Reign of the Super-Man” as a big bald guy. Obviously that idea didn’t work out, so they re-conceptualized Superman as a legendary hero that fights for justice as we all know today.

Originally, Superman was referred to as “the champion of the oppressed, the physical marvel who has sworn to devote his existence to helping those in need”. The phrase and the American Way were not  popular until around the time when the U.S. started entering World War II. “Truth, justice and the American way” began in radio broadcasts of the era.

However, in 2011, Superman suddenly shunned the “American way”and ignited lots of flak from fans around this controversial statement. It was made in a short story that appears in the back of Action Comics No. 900, a special anniversary edition. To Superman, “Truth, Justice and the American Way” is “not enough anymore” and he is “tired of having his actions construed as instruments of U.S Policy”.

  • Superman used to be the poster boy for the cereal industry.

  • Superman hates going to the dentist

  • Superman has done porn! (in Action Comics #593)

So how many out of the above 10 facts do you know? Drop us a comment below because we’d love to hear from you!

Youth, Success and the Mini Skirt

ImageIn an international conference, there was a successful young lady in her 20s that impressed everyone with her never-ending list of outstanding achievements. She took great pride in her career successes, which never fail to bring her status, wealth, and respects from many others.

“Have you ever gone to a club, wearing a mini-skirt and doing crazy things with your friends in the last 20 years?”, out of a sudden, a professor in the conference asked.

Surprised and unprepared, the young lady answered: “No, I haven’t. I was too busy with my career to do all of this.”

The professor smiled and spoke gently: “Don’t worry, I’m not going to blame you for that. But you know what, there are certain things that you can only do when you are young. I have been wearing long pants for the last 80 years and there is nothing wrong with that. But think about it, will you still wear a mini-skirt, go to a club and kiss a random guy when you are 80 years old?…

Once youth and beauty leave you, they are gone for eternity. So after this, maybe you will want to spend some time enjoying life and do crazy things when you are still young, won’t you?”

6 things that I learnt in my 20

1) Try not to be a commitment-freak.
Anybody knows that going to college is something extremely exciting. When you are about to enter university, you are possibly enticed to join a whole bunch of CCAs, Orientation Camps, interest groups, hall activities or something seemingly more prestigious – your school’s student union. However, don’t be a fool and over-commit yourself in too many activities. That is an indirect way to kill yourself as you will surely find yourself limping through the semester.

2)You might be crazily interested in hundreds of things/clubs that your school offers, but always remember to prioritize.

Consider which one will add more value to your personal development, build up your social network, get you off your chair to exercise or just simply make you enjoy yourself doing it and then commit to it. Never promise to join those activities that you clearly know that you will not be able to (or just don’t want to) invest your precious time in it. There are only 24 hours per day and you are absolutely not superman/woman in its true sense plus the fact that human’s most basic need nowadays is surfing internet (considering facebook/youtube as your best of friends), you would rather spend your time getting enough sleep to sustain your life than participate in your CCAs. Trust me.

3) Opportunities, experiences and knowledge are out there.
Lots of them. Just have faith and keep looking if you haven’t got what you want. As long as you have tried your best, gathered as much help as possible from seniors, friends, teachers, tutors and had patience in your journey of self-development, opportunities will come to you. If you are longing for a good internship for summer and things didn’t happen the way you have expected, keep applying.

4) You will never be able to survive college if your main sources of energy are from instant noodles and Milo.

I admit that they taste freaking awesome if you eat them once in a while, but instant noodles, while cheap, cannot replace one’s daily diet. If you don’t want to be fainted due to low blood sugar during the day, remember to eat properly. Fast food and late-night suppers are inevitable, but think twice before you decide to go or not. Your health as well as your pocket money will soon approach an alarming state long before you  know it. Be careful also if you spontaneously decide to “purify” yourself by temporarily adopting a vegetarian diet while in school. Without a proper dieting guidelines, you will never be able to cope with school work as well as those CCAs that you have promised to yourself that you will die die commit to them.

5) Although moving in with your gf,bf during college is one’s own choice of lifestyle, I personally think that it is stupid.

Temporarily moving with your boyfriend in is totally fine. But girls, please always have a backup plan. Never give up your independence (in this case is probably your room, your personal computer, your facebook password, your personal ideologies, even your virginity or whatever thing that makes you feel confident of yourself) as you move in with your boyfriend. Things change. People change. Relationships change. Faith and trust in your other half might not be eternal. You guys might agree to go steady, but steady doesn’t mean forever. So do not risk giving in everything belongs to you in a relationship, no matter how much you love the other person.

6) Friends come and go.

Do not waste your time for those that always look down on you behind your back. That’s where they are meant to be – behind you. It takes time and sleepless nights to figure out who are the friends that you have to get rid of before they drag you to their own abyss.  They make you feel bad about yourself and inject their toxic ideas into your brain with a hope that you will someday fail like them. You will have to struggle and suffer a lot from their meanness before you come to realization. But that’s when you are freed from these people. Knowing when to let go and eliminate a toxic person from your life is an important skill that anyone has to learn in life. However, this doesn’t mean that we should not have faith and trust in those around us, it just means that people are hard to understand and we need to have doubts to simply protect ourselves.
